How to beat Order Automatica ranks
Initiate teaches the shop. Penitent taxes greed. Adept asks for a real synergy.
Order Automatica is not an open world. You pick a rank, fight a sequence of opposing grids, and either snuff every enemy candle or collapse. The rank select screen shows three tarot-style cards: Initiate’s Rank, Penitent’s Rank, and Adept’s Rank. Under them, modes such as Serpent’s Arena appear as you unlock content. Steam achievements mirror the same ladder: Initiate, Penitent, and Adept of the First, Second, and Third Degree, plus hidden titles like Knower Of Chaos.
This walkthrough is a rank-by-rank plan, not a spoiler dump of every enemy portrait. Unlock order is part of the toy. What you need is the difficulty jump and the shop habits that survive it.
Initiate’s Rank
Initiate is the teaching ritual. Enemy boards are sparse. Shops are cheap. You can win with two upgraded bodies and a single item if those bodies sit in cells 1-3. Goals:
- Finish the tutorial if you have not. See Getting Started.
- End every preparation at zero Essence.
- Merge at least one unit to level 2.
- Put a tank up front and an on-death or column-buff piece behind it.
- Open the Codex after the honorable victory and read every new page.
Demo players often called fights 1 and 2 easy and fight 3 a wall. That pattern still shows up when you greed Draw Again instead of stabilizing cell 1. If fight 3 deletes you, you did not fail the rank; you failed the last shop. Replay Initiate until the win feels boring. Unlocks from the first honorable victory (Baker is a common early Codex reward) change later shops more than any mechanical trick.
Accept the victory when the game offers endless mode unless you are specifically practicing economy. Endless is for breaking the game after you already understand it.
Penitent’s Rank
Penitent adds denser enemy grids, meaner Curses, and units that punish empty cells. The shop script from Initiate still works, but leftovers hurt more:
- Curses such as Broken Coin (Draw Again costs more) and Cursed Stone (a heavy stone occupies a random empty cell) show up here more often. Plan around occupied tiles instead of assuming nine free cells. Details in candles and Curses.
- Enemy on-death units will fill their own rows. Do not leave your backline staring at a row that will be full of 1/1 fish.
- You need a real synergy, not six unrelated portraits. Pick a lane: summoner (Hermit / death spawns), adjacent engine (Madame / Imp), or economy (Pig / sell Indulgences) and feed it. Named recipes live in synergy builds.
Penitent is where Distill stops being optional. If a shop is three units you will never play, Distill one and Draw Again with the rest. Holding a random 2-cost because “it might scale” is how candles disappear.
Adept’s Rank
Adept is the launch endgame for most players. Enemy units have full kits. Cell effects land on tiles you wanted. One greedy reroll can cost the rank. Play Adept like a puzzle with a short timer made of candles:
- Identify the enemy win condition during their turn. If they are a summon board, bring splash and adjacency damage (Imp, row hits). If they are a single giant portrait, bring Taunt, Poison setups, or True Cell chip.
- Do not enter Adept with a board that only worked because Initiate enemies forgot to fill cell 1.
- Indulgences matter more than any single shop unit. Pick the persistent upgrade that matches the lane you already committed to, not the flashiest name. Rank them in the Indulgence tier list.
If you bounce off Adept twice, drop back to Penitent and force a different lane. The Codex rewards from a clean Penitent win will often unlock the unit you were trying to brute-force.
Serpent’s Arena and extra modes
Serpent’s Arena sits under the rank cards as a distinct challenge space. Treat it as a boss-style gauntlet rather than a fourth difficulty card. Shop rules do not change. What changes is the opposing script: denser curses, denser grids, less forgiveness for empty cell 1. Enter it after you can finish Adept with Essence to spare, not as a shortcut.
Steam achievements also hint at side goals (Cell Effector, Unholy Gains, Serpent’s Lesson). Chase those after you can consistently snuff Initiate candles. They are Codex homework, not a second campaign.
When to stop a run
Candles are the only clock. If you have one candle and the shop is asking you to Distill your tank, take the fight on a stable board instead of fishing. Collapsing a rank still unlocks knowledge; it does not unlock the next tarot card. The updates hub is where we will note roster changes after 1.00. Until then, assume the launch counts: 20 player units, 17 enemies, 19 items, 18 cell effects, 24 Indulgences, 9 Curses.
For placement details that decide these ranks, stay in grid and positioning. For the portraits themselves, use the unit tier list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for the current ritual.
How many ranks are in Order Automatica at launch?
Three main ranks: Initiate, Penitent, and Adept. Extra modes such as Serpent's Arena unlock beside them.
Should I play endless after an honorable victory?
Only if you want to practice breaking the board. Accepting the win is how you bank Codex unlocks.
Why is Penitent so much harder than Initiate?
Enemy grids fill faster, Curses occupy cells, and leftover Essence plus random shops get punished. You need a synergy lane, not a pile of 1-cost units.
Is there a story campaign beyond ranks?
The story is told in Codex fragments and journal pages. Progression is still rank victories, not a separate overworld.
