Order Automatica demo vs the full ritual

The demo is a teacher. 4 September 2026 is the finished Adept ladder.

Demo vs Full Game

Order Automatica had a public demo for years before the 4 September 2026 launch. Steam still hosts it as a free app (2577030) beside the paid 1.00 build (2105840). This page is the diff so you do not learn the wrong shop from a 2024 video and then wonder why Distill looks different.

If you have not played at all, start with the in-game tutorial, then Getting Started. If you already burned candles in the demo, read this, then launch notes.

What the demo is for

Publisher copy is honest: the demo is a special build that introduces the core systems step by step. You get the 3x3 grid, Essence, candles, a slice of the shop, and enough units to feel a synergy. You do not get the full Adept ladder, the complete 20-unit Codex, or every Indulgence and Curse.

Historically the demo was updated whenever the team wanted feedback:

  • 19 September 2023 — demo first public on Steam.
  • 23 December 2025 — Indulgences and Curses explained as persistent modifiers (Steam news).
  • 14 May 2026 — full controller support, animation polish, Steam Deck playable without fake-mouse binds.
  • 11 August 2026 — release-date announcement; demo refreshed to the latest teaching build.

The 11 August post is the one to remember: when they locked 4 September, they also pushed the demo so newcomers would not learn a dead UI.

What 1.00 adds

Launch day counts from Steam news and publisher notes:

LayerLaunch
Player units20
Enemy units17
Items19
Cell effects18 (9 / 9)
Indulgences24
Curses9
Steam achievements19
RanksInitiate, Penitent, Adept, plus modes such as Serpent’s Arena

Platforms on the same day: Steam, GOG, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, iOS, Android. Console ports by Draw Distance. Price $5.99 with a two-week 20% launch discount on several stores. Languages: English, Simplified Chinese, Polish, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean (Comma 49 joined for Asia two days before launch).

The demo will not show you all of that. Baker as a Codex reward, Adept’s shop tax, and Serpent’s Arena’s Golden One are launch-structure content. Treat demo footage as grammar, not as a spoiler of the full roster.

Rules that did not change

These sentences are true in the demo and in 1.00. If a YouTube from 2022 disagrees, the video is old.

  • Single-player only. The enemy grid is an opposing ritual, not a human.
  • You act in preparation. Fights run automatically.
  • Cell numbers are attack order. Adjacency is cardinal.
  • Unused Essence vanishes when the fight starts.
  • Units resurrect as they were at the end of the last preparation.
  • Distill, Hold, Discard, and Cell Effect are the extra buttons around the board.

Grid and positioning and shop, Distill, and merge are written against 1.00. They still apply if you are only on the demo — the demo is a subset, not a different genre.

Rules that did change (or looked like they did)

Controller support. Early Deck advice was left-stick-as-mouse. As of the May 2026 demo update and the pre-launch patch, full gamepad maps exist. Controls is the current table.

Targeting. Modern builds attack the lowest numbered occupied enemy cell. Older clips may show different portraits lighting up. Hover the tooltip in your copy.

Roster names. Zombie and Manifester were called too strong on itch.io. Launch-week Codex pages do not always match 2025 forum stats. Rank from the card in front of you; the unit tier list says the same thing.

Shop density. Demo shops are teaching shops. 1.00 Penitent and Adept inject more Curses and enemy summoners. Players who crushed Initiate 1–2 in the demo and then posted “too easy” hit the cliff the ranks walkthrough exists for.

Should you play the demo first?

Yes if you have not spent $6 yet and you want to know whether a 3x3 autobattler is your evening. The demo is free. The launch review is the buyer’s filter; the demo is the hands-on version of that filter.

Skip the demo if you already own 1.00. The tutorial inside the full game covers the same drag-and-drop lesson without locking you out of Adept.

Where the footage on this wiki comes from

We embed one real video per page, in the middle of the article. Demo-era clips stay on pages that teach grammar (getting started, Distill, candles). The trailer on this page is the official Indie Fan Fest 2026 demo trailer — a 31-second look at the board, not a hidden S-tier recipe. Launch trailers live on launch notes and platforms.

If a creator’s shop UI does not match yours, check the upload date against the May 2026 controller update and the 4 September launch. Then open Codex.

Play the demo to learn the loop. Buy 1.00 to finish the ritual.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for the current ritual.

Is the Order Automatica demo still available?

Yes. It is free on Steam next to the full game. It is a teaching build, not the complete Adept content.

Does the demo include all 20 units?

No. Launch shipped 20 player units in the full Codex. The demo is a subset meant to teach the shop and the grid.

Did controller support come with launch or earlier?

Full controller support landed in the 14 May 2026 demo update and shipped in 1.00. Steam Deck no longer needs fake-mouse binds. See Controls.

Should I watch old YouTube before playing?

Watch for the loop, not for exact stats. Believe the 1.00 Codex over a 2024 shop screenshot.
